Die hard supporters of President Donald Trump are reportedly planning a demonstration in the nation’s capital on Jan. 6, according to WAMU News, and related rallies may be planned at state capitols according to one message circulating on social media.
Over the holiday weekend, President Trump sent a tweet about the protest, encouraging people to attend. In his message, the president declared, “Statistically impossible to have lost the 2020 Election. Big protest in DC on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”
On the same day, according to a message on Facebook, a rally calling itself “Operation Occupy the Capitol” will begin at noon—presumably at that hour in each successive time zone—as an effort to “take back” the country from allegedly “corrupt politicians.” This is apparently planned at all 50 state capitols.
Reacting to the president’s continued insistence that he was the victim of vote fraud and election theft, the New York Post published an editorial headline calling on Trump to “Give it up, Mr. President, for your sake and the nation’s.”
“Unfortunately,” the editorial states, “you’re obsessed with…Jan. 6, when Congress will, in a pro forma action, certify the Electoral College vote. You have tweeted that, as long as Republicans have ‘courage,’ they can overturn the results and give you four more years in office. In other words, you’re cheering for an undemocratic coup.”
Out in Washington State, the Daily Olympian is reporting that, “A right-wing militia organization is planning to enter and occupy the state Legislative Building when the 2021 session begins, saying keeping the Capitol closed while the Legislature works remotely is unconstitutional.”
The newspaper identifies this group as the “Washington Three Percenters,” and describes them as “a militia group.” There is no indication that this protest will have any connection to the apparent rally on Jan. 6.
A group called “Stop the Steal” has posted a message online declaring, “We the People must take to the US Capitol lawn and steps and tell Congress #DoNotCertify on #JAN6! Congress cannot certify this fraudulent Electoral College. Our presence in Washington D.C. will let Members of Congress know that we stand with Rep. Mo Brooks and his colleagues in the House of Representatives who will bravely object to the certification of the Electoral College. We’re in need of at least one Senator. We’ve identified six (seven including Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville) that could join our cause.”
The group points readers to another website “WildProtest.com” for details of the planned event. That website repeats the “Stop the Steal” message and identifies several invited speakers and guests.
Business Insider reported Monday, “Several pro-Trump Republicans, however, have said they plan to disrupt the formal process, with Representative-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia tweeting on Saturday: “On January 6th…I will OBJECT and REJECT the fraudulent electoral votes from several states across the country.”
As if that weren’t enough, Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert is leading “a group of Republicans” in a lawsuit against Vice President Mike Pence in hopes of overturning the 2020 election, according to the Washington Times. The newspaper says Gohmert’s lawsuit “claims Mr. Pence has the ‘exclusive authority’ to decide which electors should be counted when Congress meets on Jan. 6 to finalize the results of last month’s presidential election.”
It’s beginning to look like 2020 was only a prelude to what may be ahead in 2021.
