When House Democrats staged a gun control sit-in to demand votes on more restrictive regulations in reaction to the Orlando terror attack, they were quickly subjected to an ethics complaint by the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT).
Almost immediately, the Second Amendment Foundation said that members of Congress who violated House rules, as identified and described in the FACT complaint, should be punished, specifically for attacking the Second Amendment. The FACT allegations said certain House members used the sit-in as an opportunity to send fundraising emails, and SAF noted that the entire episode was aimed at ratcheting down on gun rights.
“I hope that these Democrat assault politicians get punished for their ethics violations,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “What they should really get punished for is violating their oath of office to protect our Constitution and the Second Amendment rights it protects.”
Gottlieb was interviewed by Guns.com and TGM about the incident.
“Bad enough that some House members appear to have exploited the sit-in for their own political purpose,” he observed, “but their antics were primarily aimed at eroding the Second Amendment. Whether they like it or not, the right to keep and bear arms is part of the Bill of Rights, and if they can’t abide by that, they should hand in their resignations immediately.”
One week after the protest, House members held several events in their home states, all aimed at building support for their efforts to pass legislation prohibiting gun sales to people whose names appeared on a watch list. However, the measure they were calling for fell under criticism from gun rights groups and the American Civil Liberties Union for problems with due process.
But guns aren’t the real problem, anyway, Gottlieb suggested.
“In other countries,” he noted, “authorities blame such attacks on Islamic or political extremism. But in the United States, Democrats always seem to blame such attacks on the Second Amendment, and they try to penalize 90 million law-abiding gun owners for something they didn’t do.”
He likened the Democrats’ move to taking car keys away from every driver because a drunk crashed into a school bus.
“Democrats would rather go after guns because it diverts public attention away from the fact that they have been either unwilling or unable to prevent terror attacks on American soil,” Gottlieb said.
