Republican Utah Senator Mitt Romney has reportedly confirmed he will support a floor vote on a nominee to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death last Friday of Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to Politico.
President Donald Trump said he will announce a nominee on Saturday. He has narrowed the field down to five female candidates, but Senate Democrats are reportedly lining up for a pitched battle, even though their treatment of Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings resulted in embarrassment and some lost seats for the party.
In a prepared statement released Tuesday, Romney said, “I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the president’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications.”
Anti-gun Democrats are already promising trouble, however. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi even hinted at launching another impeachment effort against the president.
The president’s “short list” reportedly includes Judge Amy Coney Barrett, 48, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, who is considered the front-runner; Judge Barbara Logoa, 52, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, and Judge Allison Jones Rushing, 38, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, according to Fox News and other news agencies.
