Mossberg unveils magazine-fed pump shotgun
At the recent SHOT Show, Mossberg unveiled their Model 590M, a new take on their most famous pump-action shotgun. The updated design feeds from detachable box magazines with an impressive capacity. People often recommend pump shotguns for self-defense because they’re affordable, simple and effective. However, most short shotguns used for protection don’t hold a lot of ammo and are slow to reload one shell at a time. The 590M doesn’t have these problems. Feeding on 5-, 10-, 15- or 20-round magazines, this shotgun offers drum mag volumes of ammo in a tidy, compact package. Mossberg is offering two versions of the 590M, a base model and an upgraded Tri-Rail version. The standard model is a straightforward 590 converted to use box magazines. It has a standard stock and forend and a simple bead front sight. The 590M Tri-Rail is the practical-tactical version with a railed forend for lights and other accessories, raised ghost ring sights and a long heatshield to cover the barrel. The guns have dual push-button magazine releases in front of the trigger guard. This makes them essentially ambidextrous, just like standard 590s. All the other 590 features are there too, including twin action bars for smooth cycling, drilled and tapped receivers for optics, heavy barrel and improved receiver components. Available immediately only in 12-ga. with 2¾-inch shell chamber, in cylinder bore (590M) or Accu-Choke (590M Tri-Rail). The base model 590M has a $721 MSRP while the Tri-Rail model runs a little more at $801. Mags aren’t cheap, ranging from $100 to about $140. Weatherby® introduces the Mark V® CarbonMark™ rifle
Weatherby has created an entirely new breakthrough in rifle performance by combining their venerable, 9-lug magnum action with a stunningly-precise, carbon-fiber barrel. To make the Mark V CarbonMark a reality, the legendary American rifle maker chose the leader in carbon-fiber technology, Proof Research, to custom build their exclusive barrels chambered in .257 Wby Mag, 6.5-300 Wby Mag and .300 Wby Mag. The aerospace-grade carbon fiber in the Mark V CarbonMark barrel has a specific strength up to 30 times stronger than stainless steel, and a specific stiffness up to 7 times stiffer. It makes the barrel up to 64% lighter than traditional steel barrels of the same contour. Carbon-fiber technology also improves heat dissipation for cooler, more consistent performance; reduced point-of-impact shift during high-volume fire; and diminished harmonic barrel vibration. The 26” #4 contour carbon-fiber barrel has a cut-rifled, hand-lapped 416R grade stainless steel core with a flush thread cap and 5/8-24 muzzle threads for easy suppressor installation. It’s finished in tactical gray Cerakote® for incredible durability. Not surprisingly, the Mark V CarbonMark carries Weatherby’s SUB-MOA accuracy guarantee that promises .99” or less 3-shot groups at 100 yards when used with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition. Like other Weatherby Mark Vs, the CarbonMark comes standard with an LXX™ trigger for a crisp, precise pull that’s critical for long-range accuracy. It also has a fluted bolt body, integral recoil lug, and a 54-degree bolt lift for fast, smooth cycling.
