Two of the top names in metallic cartridge reloading are now joined together with the announcement that Hodgdon Powder Company has purchased RCBS, the legendary manufacturer of reloading presses, dies and accessories, according to The Outdoor Wire.
Word began spreading across social media courtesy of Tom Gresham, host of the widely syndicated “Gun Talk” radio program. In a note to his followers, Gresham observed, “This keeps RCBS in the United States and also puts it under a family operation which cares about the long term rather than making quarterly numbers to satisfy stock analysts. As of this morning, RCBS is operating under Hodgdon’s ownership. Congrats to the fine team at Hodgdon.”
In an announcement from Hodgdon, the company founded by the late Bruce and Amy Hodgdon in 1947, the acquisition was completed May 2. Hodgdon distributes reloading propellants including Hodgdon, IMR, Ramshot, Accurate and Winchester, plus black powder substitute propellants Pyrodex, Triple Seven and Blackhorn 209.
RCBS was founded in 1943 and has become a giant in the reloading industry, producing shell holdersm powder measures and priming products in addition to presses and dies.
Hodgdon has company-owned facilities in Shawnee, Kansas and Miles City, Montana. RCBS operates a facility in Oroville, California.
“For years, our friends have referred to the Hodgdon family and company as ‘The Gunpowder People’ and this acquisition further demonstrates our dedication to the handloader,” said J.B. Hodgdon, co-owner with his late brother Bob, of the Hodgdon Powder Company. “Our dad Bruce partnered with Fred Huntington from RCBSto conduct Reloading Roadshow events in the 1950s and 1960s. I believe they both are looking down today, proud to have our two great brands together in 2024.”
“For more than 80 years, RCBS has demonstrated their manufacturing, innovation and operational excellence,” Said Eric Nyman, Co-CEO of Vista Outdoor and CEO of Revelyst. “We are thrilled for RCBS and their new ownership with Hodgdon Powder. This transaction joins two iconic brands, and it ensures that RCBS is positioned for success in the next chapter of its history.”
Revelyst is a segment of Vista Outdoor Inc. (NYSE: VSTO), a collective of world-class maker brands that design and manufacture performance gear and precision technologies. Portfolio brands include Foresight Sports, Bushnell Golf, Fox, Bell, Giro, CamelBak, Bushnell, Simms Fishing and more.
“As part of Hodgdon, RCBS is positioned for growth with a company whose deep history in ammunition components, domestic manufacturing, and reputation with core shooting sports enthusiasts will help RCBS flourish,” said Steve Kehrwald, president and CEO of Hodgdon Powder. “Under Hodgdon’s ownership, RCBS can continue its operational excellence, growth and scale across the shooting sports industry.”
The sale is effective immediately. The teams are excited to transition the business and continue to serve valued customers for years to come.
“Selling RCBS allows us to raise cash to create a more dynamic portfolio for our company’s future,” said Andy Keegan, CFO of Revelyst. “Revelyst will use proceeds from the sale to enhance the operational efficiencies of the company’s power brands, evaluate bolt-on acquisitions, and invest in maker-fueled innovation and organic growth.”
Baird served as exclusive financial adviser and Reed Smith LLP served as legal adviser to Revelyst on this transaction.
