The arrest of a 15-year-old suspect in a shooting that rocked the Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin underscores the astonishment among gun rights activists over a remark by Mayor Dennis McBride that exhibited what one nationally-recognized writer called “delusional” reasoning.
Following the shooting, which left eight people injured, Mayor McBride issued a prepared statement in which he said, “Guns have no place in shopping malls or other places in which crowds of people gather. Mayfair has a strict no-gun policy. If the shooter had complied with that policy, no one would have been hurt yesterday.”
But writing sarcastically at Ammoland, veteran citizen journalist David Codrea declared, “If only violent criminals would behave themselves!”
Codrea was one of a handful of journalists who investigated and reported the “Fast and Furious” gun walking scandal of the Barack Obama administration.
The fact that a teen was arrested in connection with the shooting, and a gun was recovered that police believe was used, makes McBride’s remark seem even more naïve to Second Amendment activists.
People involved in mass shootings ignore such restrictions. That has been demonstrated repeatedly in tragedies across the country. And 15-year-olds cannot legally carry concealed handguns in public anywhere in the United States.
McBride, a Democrat, also said in his statement, “The City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention has offered its services to anyone affected by (the) event.”
