The Oregon Firearms Federation is warning Beaver State gun owners that Democrats in Salem “continue to promote legislation to empower criminals and violent crime skyrockets in Portland” while scheduling a hearing on legislation aimed at forcing gun owners to lock up their firearms.
House Bill 2510 is scheduled for a hearing before the House Committee on Health Care at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 11.
“As in previous attempts to render firearms useless for self-defense, the bill punishes gun owners who are victims of theft and contains not one single word about penalties for gun thieves,” OFF says in an alert. “While life in Oregon, especially our cities, becomes increasingly perilous, Oregon Democrats are working overtime to make sure you and your family are defenseless.
“And rest assured,” the message continues, “these actions are not the result of ignorance. Oregon Democrats are pushing bills to make criminals out of law abiding gun owners while neutering the police, so this bill is just one more effort to make sure that thugs are protected while you and your family are robbed of any means of protecting yourselves.”
According to a summary of the bill, it would require “the owner or possessor of firearm to secure firearm with trigger or cable lock, in locked container or in gun room except in specified circumstances.”
Violations could result in a $500 fine and if a minor gets access to an unsecured firearm, the fine could go up to a maximum of $2,000.
Gun owners would be required to report theft of firearms within 72 hours of when the theft or loss is discovered.
The legislation also “Directs Oregon Health Authority to specify by rule minimum specifications for trigger and cable locks and locked containers required by Act.”
This raises a question about why the state health authority would know anything about firearms safety lock devices.
“This bill is sheer lunacy at a time when Oregon is seeing unprecedented spikes in violent crime and a complete inability of police to address it,” OFF said in its alert.” Meanwhile, looters and rioters are routinely being returned to our streets and facing no prosecutions.”
