All three Democrat hopefuls in the primary race for the Ohio State Senate seat in the 6th District are all pushing gun control as part of their platforms as the March 19 primary looms., according to the Dayton Daily News.
Only a single Republican is running to replace Sen. Niraj Antani, who has announced his intention to run for Congress. That candidate is Charlotte McGuire, a member of the Ohio Board of Education, the newspaper said.
In a statement posted on “X” (formerly Twitter), Democrat State Rep. Willis Blackshear coined a new phrase to camouflage his intention to ban modern semiautomatic rifles. He calls them “mass casualty weapons.”
“Banning mass casualty weapons is a commonsense measure that will prevent needless loss of life,” Blackshear said on his website. “In 2019, our community felt that loss with the horrific tragedy that took place in the Oregon district. There is no reason to have guns equipped with magazines that can hold 50, 70, or even 100 rounds. It’s time to take action and ban these weapons so that our communities can be safer.”
Jocelyn Rhynard, a member of the Dayton School Board, promises in her various platform statements posted online that, “As state senator, I will work with organizations like Moms Demand Action to guide policy and legislation such as safe storage laws, criminal background checks, magazine capacity restrictions, red flag laws, and banning assault weapons.”
The third Democrat vying for the nomination March 19 is Kettering City Councilwoman Jyl Hall. She has not been as vocal about gun control as the other two, but the newspaper said she, along with her fellow Democrats, supports measures to repeal Ohio’s permitless carry law, declare “gun violence” a public health crisis, prohibit gun possession by anyone convicted of first degree misdemeanor domestic violence and form a “gun violence task force” in the state.
Meanwhile, Republican McGuire has a “nuanced approach to gun rights,” according to BNN Breaking news. The report said she supports the Second Amendment, but she is also willing to “consider certain gun control measures.”
