Democrat lawmakers in New Mexico are pushing for more gun control, but they’ve got only a 30-day session to do it, and there is going to be a fight.
According to KOAT News, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is determined to press “public safety” and Democrats want more gun laws. High on the list is a 14-day waiting period on gun purchases.
As explained by Democrat Rep. Andrea Romero, “House Bill 129 is a 14-day waiting period before getting access to a firearm. The reason why we know that this type of legislation works is because a waiting period for those who might do harm to themselves or others is basically a cooling off period to make a better decision potentially to those who have access.”
While noting that most background checks are “immediate,” she contended that data about mass shootings indicates, “many mass shooters have purchased firearms within that 3, 7 and 10-day waiting period, when they made the decision to purchase a firearm, and then commit a mass shooting.”
She is also sponsoring House Bill 137, which “regulates” gas-operated semiautomatic firearms. Romero says it is not an “assault weapons ban.” But the bill specifically makes it unlawful “for any person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or receive” firearms listed as prohibited gas-operated semiautomatic firearms, as well as parts for such guns.”
Second Amendment groups as far away as Ohio are talking about New Mexico. In an alert to members, the Buckeye Firearms Association rips Lujan Grisham.
“At the top of her agenda, like the Biden administration, is punishing the firearm industry,” the message states.
Fox News reported that an impeachment effort has been launched by Republican Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block. They contend Lujan Grisham’s attempt to use emergency public health orders last year to suspend Second Amendment rights in Albuquerque and the surrounding area was a violation of her oath of office.
In a statement quoted by Fox News, Lord said, “The rights of New Mexicans are not up for debate, and no matter how hard Lujan Grisham tries to violate the Constitution, she will never succeed.”
