Following the resurrection of the famous King Cobra by Colt several months ago as a fixed-sight revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, the company has just announced the King Cobra Target model, with an adjustable rear sight and stainless construction.
Having had the opportunity earlier this year to put the fixed-sight model through its paces, and finding it to be a tough, reliable wheelgun, the return of a King Cobra with an adjustable sight is very good news.
The gang in West Hartford is continuing its resurrection of Colt’s famous “snake guns,” although there is no word on whether the legendary Python will ever return, but so far, Colt’s revolver revival is welcome news to handgunners.
Last year, Colt brought back the Cobra in .38 Special, and I also had the chance to shoot that round gun during a field evaluation. It is capable of handling +P ammunition, unlike the original, and there are a few other improvements such as its all-stainless construction that make it a winner for concealed carry.
In my humble opinion, the .357 Magnum is a cartridge that requires an adjustable sight to achieve its full potential because even out of a 4.25-inch barrel with full underlug and solid top rib, as the new King Cobra Target model wears, it is a long-range caliber capable of serious work even beyond a hundred yards.
Images provided by Colt show that this new entry has a recessed crown, slightly elongated trigger guard and smooth trigger.
According to Colt’s announcement, the new King Cobra Target model has an elevated fiber optic front sight and custom wood medallion grips. Those grips are textured for a firm hold even in crummy weather, and the handgun wears a non-glare finish.
The barrel is cut with six lands and groves on a 1:14-inch left-hand twist. Overall length is 9.25 inches and the revolver weighs 36 ounces, empty.
Adding the adjustable rear sight appears to be by popular demand, according to Marketing Director Justin Baldini.
“After releasing the King Cobra earlier this year we received a flood of requests for a 4-inch model with adjustable sights,” he explained. “Our customers are excited to bring their Colts to the range and the King Cobra Target is engineered for accurate and enjoyable shooting. The longer barrel and custom wood grips also just look fantastic.
“We’ve precisely tweaked this revolver,” he added, “to get it exactly where we want it and know our customers will feel the difference.”
The MSRP on this new entry is $999.00, according to Colt.
