The adjusted June 2021 National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,279,300 is a decrease of 41.3 percent from June 2020, but according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the second quarter adjusted NICS data is the highest second quarter on record.
NSSF said the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 4,297,837 reflects a decrease of 21.2 percent as compared to the second quarter 2020 figure of 5,451,599. Historically, this is the highest second quarter on record.
According to FBI raw data on all NICS checks, last month saw 3,054,726 NICS checks. This figure does not reflect the number of retail firearms transactions, however. That’s why NSSF adjusts the data each month to more accurately reflect gun-related activity.
NSSF said in a news release, “Twenty-five states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.”
