In what appears to be a list-ditch effort to terrify the nation’s gun owners into rejecting Donald Trump, Kamala Harris appeared on the Club Shay Shay podcast alleging the former president wants to “terminate the constitution” including the First and Second amendments.
It was a stunning accusation about 37 minutes into the hour-long appearance. As noted by the New York Post, “The Democratic vice president has long argued the GOP former president would fundamentally change the American Constitution but had not previously specifically claimed he would go after the First and Second Amendments, especially as many in her party want to reform gun rights.”
That part of the conversation began with Harris asking host Shannon Sharpe, “Should he (Trump) have the ability to sit behind the seal of the President of the United States when he says he wants to terminate the constitution of the United States?”
Trump made a comment back in 2022, in reference to the 2020 election results, which he disputed.
Harris amplified her allegation, stating, “You know what that would mean? In the Constitution of the United States is your Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure, your Fifth Amendment right [to due process], your Sixth Amendment right to an attorney. Right?”
She immediately added, “The First Amendment [right to free speech], the Second Amendment [right to bear arms],” adding, “Look, I’m in favor of the Second Amendment. I don’t believe we should be taking anyone’s guns away.”
However, her comments suggest she may have skipped an American Government course, as the NYPost was quick to explain, “US presidents cannot change the Constitution, as the amendment powers rest with Congress. What a president could do is issue executive orders that pertain to how the law is interpreted, but even those orders would have to be constitutionally sound.”
Her sudden defense of Second Amendment rights was stunning, considering her advocacy for “mandatory buybacks” of so-called “assault weapons.” She has been a gun control proponent since her days as a prosecutor in San Francisco. Back then, she supported Proposition H, to ban city residents from selling or transferring handguns.
Last month, however, Harris admitted she owns a Glock pistol.
Also, earlier this month, the Second Amendment Foundation posted an advertisement containing actual Harris remarks relating to gun troll and prohibition.
The Post article noted, “The Democratic vice president has long argued the GOP former president would fundamentally change the American Constitution but had not previously specifically claimed he would go after the First and Second Amendments, especially as many in her party want to reform gun rights.”
It was not clear what was meant by “reform gun rights.” Rights are not measures which can be “reformed.”
As the final week of the 2024 campaign begins, various polling appears to show the vice president losing ground in some states, including Virginia and New Hampshire. The election still looks too close to call.
But what is not in question is Trump’s adherence to the Second Amendment, even though his felony conviction in New York earlier this year stripped him of his gun rights. The conviction is currently under appeal, and was seen by Trump supporters and conservative media as a political prosecution which they expect to be overturned.
