By a largely party-line vote of 224-198 with two members voting “present,” the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday formally censured Texas Democrat Congressman Al Green for his disruption of President Donald Trump’s Tuesday evening speech.
Rep. Green, who has a history of supporting gun control legislation, was ejected from the House chamber after repeatedly ignoring calls from House Speaker Mike Johnson to take his seat. During his now-infamous rant, Green waved a cane.
According to WNCT News, Green is the 28th member of the House “to receive the congressional rebuke.”
Green, who recently announced he was filing articles of impeachment against Trump, has been in Congress since winning election in Texas’ 9th District, which had at that time been recently configured.
According to his official biography, Green “considers himself a liberated Democrat” who is “unbought, unbossed and unafraid.” He has been in Congress just over 20 years.
During that time, Green has become known as a gun control proponent. According to On The Issues, Green voted against legislation to prevent junk lawsuits against gun manufacturers. He voted to ban so-called “large-capacity magazines.” He supported H.R. 8, the “Bipartisan Background Checks Act” which would have required background checks on all private firearms transfers.
The Heritage Action group opposed the measure, calling it “poorly written” to the point of making criminals out of law-abiding Americans “who commonly make low-risk firearm transfers.” At the time, Heritage Action explained, “Congress should stop trying to force ineffective gun control laws like universal background checks on Americans and should instead focus on how to defend and protect law-abiding Americans’ rights.”
Published reports say Republicans were joined by ten moderate Democrats who voted to censure Green. Rep. Green and Rep. Shomari Figures (D-AL) voted “present.”
