Republican Georgia Congressman Andrew Clyde has introduced legislation dubbed the “No Guns for Illegal Aliens Act,” which would prohibit illegal immigrants from buying guns, using government-issued identification to complete the transaction.
According to Fox News, which broke the story Tuesday, “It’s the latest move in a wider push by House Republicans to direct attention to crime perpetuated in the U.S. by illegal immigrants after several high-profile incidents in the last few years.”
Those cases include the murders of Jocelyn Ningaray in Texas, Rachel Morin in Maryland and Laken Riley in Georgia. None of these involved a firearm, but Rep. Clyde, who owns a gun store and holds a federal firearms license, contends “progressive policies” allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses could “open the door to more crime,” Fox News said.
Currently, 19 states plus the District of Columbia offer drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants. Those states are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. These licenses are apparently offered under the constitutional authority of the 10th Amendment. The applicant must provide documentation such as a foreign passport, foreign birth certificate or consular card, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
According to Fox News Digital, Clyde asserted, “Border Czar Kamala Harris has allowed criminal illegal aliens to enter our country and roam our streets. Meanwhile, radical liberals like Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are offering driver’s licenses to illegals – creating a recipe for disaster.”
In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” reporter Bill Whitaker, Harris danced around answering a question about Joe Biden’s record on immigration, which has resulted in millions of illegal immigrants crossing the border over the past 3 ½ years. As Whitaker noted, during the first three years of the Biden-Harris administration, “border arrivals quadrupled and there was no action from Biden or Harris,” Fox reported.
Whitaker asked point blank if it was a mistake to ‘loosen the immigration policies as much as you did.” Harris would not answer.
