After 23 years of leading and guiding Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO, Dr. Timothy Wheeler, MD retired at the end of 2016 from the day-to-day operations of the project.
Wheeler was a pioneer when he founded DRGO, which was a bold step in the face of political correctness and the prevailing attitudes about firearms within the medical community, especially the American Medical Association. He has broken much new ground over the past two-plus decades.
Wheeler disclosed his intentions at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference in September in Orlando.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my years of work with DRGO and value the collaboration of many of you over the years in advancing our Second Amendment rights. I will remain available to DRGO’s leadership team in a consulting capacity. Thanks to all of you, and I look forward to DRGO’s continued good relations with everyone under our new leadership,” Wheeler said in an announcement delivered to media and DRGO membership.
The new leadership team includes Arthur Przebinda, MD as project director and Robert B. young, MD as executive editor, according to a DRGO news release.
Also on the team are John Edeen, MD as membership director and Sean Brodale, DO as outreach director.
The organization was founded by Wheeler in 1994 as a non-profit program of the Claremont Institute, but is now a project of the tax-exempt Second Amendment Foundation. DRGO has grown to be a nationwide advocacy and watchdog group of physicians and other health care professionals who support the safe and lawful use of firearms and respond to inaccuracies in media reports about guns and often misleading gun-related studies.
DRGO maintains a website (DRGO.US) which publishes an almost weekly magazine of pro-gun rights articles by medical professionals.
