When 2016 Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton appeared on CNN to discuss the combative atmosphere in Washington, D.C. surrounding the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, and the midterm elections, she tried to justify the lack of civility on the part of Democrats and liberals.
It backfired immediately, when TGM Publisher Alan Gottlieb and Senior Editor Dave Workman teamed up with an Op-Ed response that was sent to every newspaper in the country. Here’s what they had to say, perhaps with tongue in cheek:
————————————-
For once, American gun owners can wholeheartedly agree with Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Speaking with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Clinton declared, “You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.”
That’s just what tens of millions of gun owners think, which is why they will not vote for Democrats in November, or anytime in the foreseeable future. Clinton’s Democrats have become the “party of gun control.” It is one of the main reasons Democrats lined up against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Democrats have pushed gun bans and other gun control schemes at the state and federal levels for years. Whenever Democrat politicians profess to “support the Second Amendment,” there is invariably a “…but” followed by some argument that “we have to do something.” And it is the law-abiding gun owner who is penalized.
When Clinton lost Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida in 2016, gun owners made the difference. That’s because early in her presidential campaign, Clinton unapologetically declared war on the National Rifle Association, and by default, all the other Second Amendment organizations and every gun owner in the country.
When Clinton told Amanpour that “the only thing Republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength,” she could have easily been talking about her own party as well. After all, what has prevented Democrats from eroding the Second Amendment to the point that it would become a government-regulated privilege is the strength and resolve of tens of millions of law-abiding gun owners.
But Clinton’s claim that “civility can start again” only if Democrats win back the House or Senate is simply preposterous, and she knows it. Democrats have already talked about immediately trying to impeach pro-gun President Donald Trump and Justice Kavanaugh, who issued a strong pro-Second Amendment dissent while on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and that would ignite the most uncivil constitutional crisis in modern history.
Gun owners can agree with Clinton about the inability to be civil with a political party – her party, which cannot seem to get past November 2016 – that seems hell bent on destroying everything the Second Amendment stands for; liberty, self-reliance, personal safety and the ability to just say “No” to demagogues like her.
The more Clinton talks, the more American gun owners will respond by heading to the polls this fall and in years ahead. To paraphrase Barack Obama, while Clinton and people like her guide the Democratic Party, American gun owners will “cling to their guns.”
