The Daily Mail is reporting a devastating 15-second video clip of Kamala Harris, then serving as district attorney for San Francisco, speaking to a press conference in that city as she advocated for entering private homes to make sure gun owners were “being responsible” about storing their firearms.
The video is also being circulated on social media by the “Trump War Room.” It is not clear whether the Daily Mail or the Trump War Room first unearthed the video, which was taken from SFGTV (San Francisco Government Television).
The grainy video shows Harris standing next to then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is now California’s governor, and is also a career gun control advocate.
The story broke Wednesday and is just beginning to pick up momentum. The video apparently dates back to 2007. According to the Daily Mail, “Harris voiced her threat to check on gun owners even after Newsom argued earlier in the press conference that the legislation would not allow law enforcement to knock on everyone’s doors to make sure they were following the law.”
However, Harris can clearly be heard telling the crowd at a Newsom press conference, “Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs.”
Now vice president and running to succeed Democrat Joe Biden, Harris recently sat down with a panel at the gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists to declare, almost in the same sentence, “Yes, I am a gun owner and Tim Walz is a gun owner, and we’re not trying to take anyone’s guns away from them. But we do need an assault weapons ban.” This occurred at about 33 minutes into the interview, which is available on YouTube.
In the past, she has advocated for a “mandatory buyback” of so-called “assault weapons,” an act which many in the firearms community have referred to as “compensated confiscation.”
But this resurfaced video, apparently from 17 years ago, is reinforcing arguments that Harris is a career anti-gun demagogue. The Daily Mail points to a remark posted by nationally-recognized political commentator Tucker Carlson on “X” which declared, “This is openly totalitarian. If we don’t resist this, we’re done: “Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible.”
This year, on the campaign trail, Harris has been scrambling to walk-back her comments about mandatory buybacks, and she accused former President Donald Trump of lying about her intentions during their debate earlier this month. But her intentions seem more clear than before with the resurrection of this video.
The act of entering a private residence just to check whether guns are stored according to some government-defined safety requirements might immediately be challenged on Fourth Amendment constitutional grounds. Harris, who later became California attorney general, would know that.
