California Democrat State Sen. Dave Min (D-Irvine) was arrested Tuesday night in Sacramento on suspicion of driving under the influence, the Los Angeles Times and other news agencies are reporting.
Min was reportedly stopped by California Highway Patrol officers just before 10:25 p.m. after his vehicle was “observed” stopped at an intersection for a red light, but then “proceeded into the intersection while the light remained red.”
Min is a perennial anti-gunner who has authored various gun control measures over the past couple of years. One of his bills would require the state to stop business with “with any banks or lenders with business customers that manufacture firearms.”
Another bill would require all federally licensed firearm dealers in the State of California, and their employees, to complete annual training provided by the California Department of Justice, in an effort to prevent theft and straw sales.
Min is running for Congress, and has been endorsed by several prominent Democrats. He also posted a photo of himself and gun control advocate David Hogg, who noted on Twitter, “If you are in Orange County be sure to vote for Dave Min for congress. He has been a huge champion of gun safety in the state legislature and we need him in congress.”
Several published reports quote Min as taking full responsibility for his alleged drunk driving. He posted a message on Facebook stating, “Last night I was cited for a misdemeanor for driving under the influence. My decision to drive last night was irresponsible. I accept full responsibility and there is no excuse for my actions. To my family, constituents and supporters, I am so deeply sorry. I know I need to do better. I will not let this personal failure distract from our work in California and in Washington.”
After he was stopped, his blood alcohol level was found to have been over the legal limit. He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail and released Wednesday, reports said.
