President Joe Biden on Tuesday told an audience of gun control proponents they are “damned important” to his administration’s effort to pass his restrictive gun control agenda, and vote for his re-election in November.
As noted by the Huffington Post, “In his speech, the president reiterated his calls for a ban on assault-style weapons and urged voters to cast a ballot in November to ‘overcome the unrelenting opposition of the gun lobby.’”
As if to respond to a question from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Biden said nothing about his son, Hunter’s conviction only hours before, nor did he remind the audience “that strict federal and state gun control laws did not prevent his son from illegally buying a firearm.”
Biden’s appearance at the “Gun Sense University” event sponsored by Everytown for Gun Safety preceded his departure for the G7 summit, and only hours after Hunter Biden was found guilty on all three federal gun charges brought against him, in a Wilmington, Delaware courtroom. Sentencing will be set at a later date.
“We need you,” Biden told his audience. “We need you to overcome the unrelenting opposition of the gun lobby, gun manufacturers, so many politicians when they oppose commonsense gun legislation.”
The Associated Press is reporting that Biden’s campaign “says gun control could be a motivating issue for suburban college-educated women who may be decisive in several key battlegrounds this fall.”
Biden renewed his call for a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” and for “universal background checks” for all firearms purchases. The AP story said gun control groups are “building political muscle” heading into the 2024 campaign season.
Biden’s remarks have been transcribed by the White House.
The audience of anti-gunners cheered his remarks at several points.
As he habitually does in speeches, Biden invoked the Almighty, demanding, “Who, in God’s name, needs a magazine which can hold 200 shells?” NBC highlighted Biden’s call for a ban on modern semiautomatic rifles.
Meanwhile, Democrats are continuing to demonize their rivals as “MAGA Republicans” who are standing in the way of their gun control agenda.
“President Biden and Democrats know that it’s our duty to act to keep our schools and communities safe from the gun violence epidemic,” the party says in a prepared statement, “but MAGA Republicans who have the power to make a difference are stonewalling every step of the way – trying to roll back gun safety measures, blocking commonsense gun safety legislation, and blaming the loss of lives on everything but lax gun laws.”
