On the heels of his son’s conviction on three federal felony gun charges, President Joe Biden told an audience of gun prohibitionists at the so-called “Gun Sense University” that his administration has strengthened America’s gun control laws.
It was an awkward moment, with Hunter Biden now facing a fine and imprisonment in Delaware and the president—a gun control extremist since first arriving on Capitol Hill nearly 50 years ago—having to address a group gathered by Everytown for Gun Safety for the event. According to CNN, Biden issued a statement following his son’s conviction.
“As I said last week, I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” Biden said. “So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms had a far different perspective. In a statement to the media, CCRKBA observed, “It is ironic that on the same day the jury found Hunter Biden guilty of three federal gun-related crimes, his father, President Joe Biden, is addressing victims and survivors of gun-related violence.
“Will the president remind his audience,” CCRKBA wondered, “that strict federal and state gun control laws did not prevent his son from illegally buying a firearm?
“At some point President Biden must reflect on his half-century of gun control extremism and acknowledge that none of the laws he championed prevented his son from illegally buying a gun and being convicted of the crime in a Delaware courtroom,” the group observed.
“Meanwhile, millions of American citizens who have committed no crimes are nevertheless penalized daily by the laws and regulations the president and his anti-run-rights allies have supported in the misguided belief they have the moral high ground. Today proved otherwise,” the statement concluded.
The Associated Press reported how Biden has “reenergized the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and he’s the first president to establish a White House office devoted to preventing gun violence.”
Critics in the firearms community counter that the Biden administration as weaponized the ATF against gun owners and small-time firearms dealers, inventing criminals rather than pursuing actual criminals.
Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action, called the Biden White House “the strongest administration we’ve ever seen on this issue.”
