There are lots of new handguns on the horizon, for defense, competition, cowboys, and recreation meeting a growing demand as gun sales continue strong into 2014.
If you’re looking for a carry piece, plinker, home defense gun, or a combination, chances are you will find it at a gun shop in the days ahead.
Turnbull Manufacturing (turnbullmfg.com) has announced the 1911 Heritage Pistol, designed to replicate the Government Model as built during WWI.
Chambered in .45 ACP, it has a 5- inch barrel with a carbon steel frame, slide, trigger, hammer and grip safety.
Like the original, it has a seven-round magazine.
The frame is color case hardened using Turnbull’s traditional bone and charcoal method, while the pins, screws, trigger, slide stop and safety lever are nitre blued and the remaining parts are charcoal blued. The grips are made of black walnut checkered in the double diamond pattern.
Two new full-size handguns have been announced by Kahr Arms (kahr.com), the .40-caliber CT4043 and .45-caliber CT4543. These polymer-framed handguns both carry seven rounds in the magazine, and have stainless steel slides. The .40- caliber model has a 4-inch barrel and weighs 21.8 ounces while the .45 sports a 4.04-inch barrel and is slightly heavier at 23.7 ounces. Each gun comes with a single stainless steel magazine.
Later in the year, Kahr says consumers should watch for CT series versions of the T9, TP40 and TP45.
Sig Sauer (sigsauer.com) has announced several new pistol models, including a pair of 9mm semi-autos, a .380 ACP and a .45 ACP, and the SIG M400 B5 pistol, chambered for the 5.56mm NATO round. The P290RS in .380 ACP has re-strike double-action only capability and has a Nitron-coated stainless steel slide and polymer frame. The standard magazine carries six rounds, but an eight-round extended magazine is available. The 9mm MK-25-Desert has a stainless slide and alloy frame finished in flat dark earth Cerakote. It has Siglite night sights, black polymer grips and a 15- round magazine. Likewise, the M11- A1 Desert has a stainless slide and alloy frame with a flat dark earth Cerakote finish, Siglite night sights and a 15-round magazine. In .45 ACP, the 1911 Railed-Nickel is offered in two sizes, a full-size model with a rail and a compact model without the rail. The full-size gun has an eight-round magazine and the compact carries seven rounds.
Chambered for the 5.56mm NATO, the M400 pistol has an 11.5- inch barrel, MIL-SPEC trigger, aluminum 30-round magazine, and an M1913 rail. The upper and lower are 7075-T6 aluminum with a hard coat anodized finish.
Browning (browning.com) is expanding its series of .22-caliber pistols on the compact 1911 frame.
The new A1 Desert Tan and Compact Desert Tan both have composite frames in desert tan color, and aluminum slides finished in matte black. The A1 weighs 14 ounces with a 4¼-inch barrel and the Compact weighs 13½ ounces with a 3-5/8-inch barrel.
American Legacy (americanlegacyfirearms.com), which produces a series of guns for the Second Amendment Foundation, has announced a line of City Heritage handguns. First right of refusal on these fully-functional single-action revolvers will go to people who already purchased rifle models. The first city honored with a revolver is Charleston, WV.
The designated sixgun is a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum. It is finished with 24K gold plating on a satin finish, with walnut grips.
Cowboys ought to warm right up to some new sixguns from E.M.F. (emf-company.com), including one percussion revolver and a couple of single-action cartridge guns. The Great Western II Liberty and the stainless steel Deluxe Sheriff model come in both .357 Magnum and .45 Colt. The Great Western is offered in barrel lengths of 4¾ or 5½ inches, while the Sheriff model has a 3-inch barrel.
E.M.F. is introducing a bird’s head model of the 1860 Army capand- ball revolver called the Snub Nose. There is no loading lever, so balls must be seated with an accompanying brass ramrod.
A new safety approach from Hi Point (mkssupply.com) is this year’s packaging of a Hi Point pistol in a locking steel security box. There are four models from which to choose, starting with the CF380, a .380 ACP two-tone Hi-Point pistol with a 3.5- inch barrel, a single eight-round magazine, trigger lock and lock box.
The Model 916 is an all-black 9mm pistol, also with a 3.5-inch barrel and single eight-round magazine, trigger lock and locking box.
The Model 34011 features an all- black full-size .40-caliber pistol with a 4.5-inch barrel and a single 10-round magazine, and the Model 34511 is a .45 ACP pistol finished in black, with a 4.5-inch barrel, single nine-round magazine and trigger lock with the box.
American Tactical (americantactical.us) has announced a new .22-caliber semi-auto target 1911 pistol that arrived late in 2013.
The GSG Target 1911 is can be used as a trainer for the Model 1911 platform built by German Sports Guns. It has a 5-inch barrel, adjustable rear sight, dovetailed blade target front sight, ambidextrous thumb safety, skeletonized adjustable trigger and hammer, beavertail grip safety and curved mainspring housing.
The checkered target-style grips extend well below the pistol butt.
Some may be surprised by Mossberg’s (Mossberg.com) four AR-style handgun entries, unveiled under the International 715P banner. All are chambered for .22 LongRifle and they have 6-inch barrels and A2 style flash suppressors.
Two models come with red dot sights mounted on an integral Picatinny rail on top, and the other two feature rail-mounted metallic sights with adjustable rears. They all feature synthetic pistol grips, accessory rails around the handguard top, bottom and both sides, and two have 26-round capacities while the other two have 11-round capacities.
Freedom Arms (freedomarms.com) is adding two new calibers to its single-shot pistol family, the .243 Winchester and .45- 70 Government. This brings the total number of caliber offerings to 13. The Freedom Arms single shot is set up for scope bases, and silhouette sights come on some models.
