The National Football League (NFL), leaning on its own rules, has sidelined a proposed ad for Daniel Defense, which the company wanted to run during the upcoming Super Bowl, usually one of the highest rated scheduled television programs of the year.
The NFL and the network that shows the Super Bowl (this year on Fox) charge a premium for ads run during the hours-long pre-game, the game itself and their halftime show.
And advertisers line up, willing to spend millions and specifically createcommercials for the event.
In past years, everything from flatulent Clydesdales to stripper pole dances have shown up in the pricey ad slots. And the Super Bowl ads are sometimes watched more closely than the game, with lists of winners and losers and best and worst appearing the following Monday.
The Daniel Defense ad, which centers on home- and self-defense, does not show a product until the company’s logo appears at the end, and the logo includes one of the company’s rifles. It depicts a returning veteran at home with his wife and daughter and features the line “no one has the right to tell me how to defend them.” Marty Daniel, the company’s president, offered to change the logo to an American flag, but that compromise was rejected by the league.
It has a policy against accepting advertising for either firearms or ammunition, as well as “social cause/ advocacy” advertisements. However, the policy does not extend to stores selling those products (such as outdoor super stores). Since Daniel Defense has a brick-and-mortar establishment (where they sell non-gun items like apparel with the company logo), it would seem to be exempt from the ban policy.
The company’s website, danieldefense.com, features links to many of the commentaries that appeared in the media following the NFL’s decision to ban the commercial, including those pointing out the league’s double standard on “social advocacy” following broadcaster Bob Costas on-air tirade against guns and gunowners in 2012.
Confiscation Letters
According to multiple reports, residents of New York City have started receiving letters demanding they must surrender their rifles and/or shotguns to the authorities. According to NYC Administrative Code 10-306- (b) it is illegal to possess a rifle or shotgun that can hold more than five rounds.
These letters are only being sent to residents of New York City but it is a concern they could soon be sending similar letters to the entire state of New York. The passing of the SAFE act makes it illegal for every resident of New York to carry firearms with more than seven rounds in a magazine even if their magazine holds ten rounds, and “confiscation” was a word that was frequently used In Albany in the brief time the Act was under consideration.
New York City showed that they will first ban the amount of ammunition you can put in a gun and soon after will ban the type of gun capable of holding more ammunition. Let’s hope the state of New York does not follow suit.
We must demand every one of our State Governors do not sign anymore anti-gun proposals into laws. They are the last defense for our states and must protect our Second Amendment rights along with the interest of their state’s citizens.
