Available at most bookstores, or online at: mountain- press.com This 140-page softbound volume is an illustrated guide to making your own cowboy gear. It doesn’t feature chapters as such, but seven sections devoted to different topics, a glossary, some recommended books to read, and an index. The topics begin with Tools of the Trade, and continue through Knots, Cowboy Gear, Horse Gear, and Riding Gear, to Moving Camp (You will need a pannier to pack, and the knowledge to secure it).
The illustrations are all sketches done by the author, and where something is to be constructed, such as a bedroll, saddlebag, or chinks, the sketches are easy to follow. (A few of the horses illustrated did appear to have horns, rather than ears, reminding this reviewer of a horse he used to ride years ago.) This is a useful volume, especially for anyone wanting to construct some of their own tack. One equipment item noted missing was a scabbard for carrying a shotgun or rifle. Nothing elaborate is needed, but this reviewer recalls a one-piece saddle horn design that required only some heavy (saddle grade) leather, and a good sharp knife to construct. No glue, straps, laces, or rivets were needed. This book would be an ideal place for it, but it’s missing. Even without it this is a useful volume just for the material it presents on headstalls, hobbles, the various knots, and tying a hitch.
