The Second Amendment Foundation has received a contribution of more than $61,000 from American Legacy Firearms in Colorado, SAF’s share of proceeds from the sale of a special commemorative .45-caliber Model 1911 pistol that is a true collector’s item.
Steve Faler and Rosemary Silano traveled from Fort Collins to SAF’s headquarters in Bellevue, WA for a personal presentation, the second in what Faler says should be several. SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb was on hand to accept the donation.
The pistol, made by Auto Ordnance, features scroll-work, inscriptions on the right and left sides of the slide, and intricate work on the grip panels which are made from bonded ivory.
This latest royalty follows an initial check for $13,900, Gottlieb said.
According to Silano, the total run will be 5,000 pistols, with 100 allotted to each state. The program was announced in 2012 but really got started earlier this year.
On the pistol’s left side, an American bald eagle holds a banner declaring, “The Second Amendment protects the rights of individuals to keep and bear their own arms.” On the right side is the notation, “The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
There are also references to important court cases, including the Heller 2008 ruling and the 2010 McDonald case, the latter having been filed by SAF. There is also a reference to the Emerson case in Texas.
The top of the slide is engraved with “Second Amendment Foundation” and two American flags.
Each pistol comes with an oak display case that is etched to match the pistol’s number, and the state to which it is sent. Founded in 1974 by Gottlieb, SAF has been fighting court battles for several years and is also involved in educational efforts. It annual co-sponsors the Gun Rights Policy Conference, which will be held this year in September in Houston.

Gottlieb is thrilled with the project, and he owns the first prototype that was made last year.
