Jury selection in the long-awaited trial of Hunter Biden, only remaining son of President Joe Biden, who is facing federal charges of gun law violations, and so far, it appears women dominate the panel already accepted.
As noted by Fox News, Biden faces charges of making false statements regarding his drug use on a federal Form 4473 when he bought a handgun. He allegedly denied being a drug user, and upon completion of the transaction, he automatically became someone in illegal possession of a firearm because of his use of a controlled substance.
If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 25 years.
Already, Mother Jones is attempting to spin the case by suggesting Biden might suffer from a mental illness “including addiction” and whether this is grounds for losing one’s gun rights.
NBC News is providing running coverage of the jury selection process, noting several potential jurors have already been dismissed because they have strong feelings toward gun ownership.
The president released a statement supporting his son.
“I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” Biden said. “Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean. As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength. Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support.”
According to NBC, the trial could last about two weeks, but estimates vary. Judge Maryellen Noreika is presiding.
Politico on Monday published a “What You Should Know” article about Hunter Biden, recalling last year’s failed “sweetheart deal” to settle tax charges as well as the gun case.
Lying on a Form 4473 is a federal crime, and the form says so. Being in possession of a firearm while using illegal drugs is also a federal crime, and that is common knowledge.
One thing people will be looking for is whether Hunter Biden is treated any differently than former President Donald Trump was over the past several weeks in Manhattan. President Biden has already said he will not offer a pardon to his son, if Hunter is convicted, according to published reports.
