Whether the crowd numbers in the hundreds, or in the thousands, Massachusetts gun owners are preparing for a mid-week rally at the Boston Common on Sept. 27, to oppose HD 4420, an onerous gun control package they claim flies in the face of last year’s Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.
The rally is being organized by the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League (GOAL). Executive Director Jim Wallace said the theme is “Bring Bruen to Boston.” The group’s website says the legislation “represents the greatest attack on civil right s by a Massachusetts political ‘leader’ in modern history!”
“Everybody wants a rally,” Wallace told TGM via telephone. “We’re having signs that will read “Massachusetts Government, It’s Time for You to Comply.”
A message on the GOAL website promoting the rally says, “With more and more members of the 2A community taking action, it is time we brought our message directly to the State House. For 25 years, our State Government has demanded that we comply with their draconian, anti-civil rights laws. More than a year ago, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that their laws were unconstitutional!”
Wallace said the rally will be followed by visits with local lawmakers inside the capitol where gun owning constituents can tell their representatives face-to-face what they believe is wrong with the bill.
GOAL has put together some tips for local gun clubs:
- Local clubs should organize buses for people to easily travel to the State House.
- Get a list of club members that want to come.
- Contact your local senator and representative and make an appointment to meet with them at the State House that day.
- Draft a quick letter you can drop off in person to your Representative and Senator. Letter Writing Help
- Find your local legislators.
- Have literature and talking points ready to present to your elected officials.
- GOAL will have some signs available at the rally, but feel free to bring your own. If you bring your own, please no other political signs or banners such as those for candidates or other issues. We need to be very clear what our message is.
- When entering the State House you will have to pass through brand new security checkpoints. (Too bad our schools don’t have the same level of protection!)
A major event will underscore the fact that Bay State gun rights activists are more than just alarmed about this legislation.
The Wednesday rally will begin at 11 a.m. and Wallace says the crowd will start moving into the State House at 1 p.m.
