The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force (GVPTF)—consisting entirely of Democrat House members—sent a letter Thursday to Speaker Kevin McCarthy demanding action on so-called “gun violence prevention” legislation “without further delay.”
A press release from the office of Task Force Chairman Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) said 109 members signed the letter, which states, “As Members of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, we call on you to schedule votes on gun violence prevention legislation as soon as possible this year. We also have a new standing request that should the vote schedule fall apart again, you would fill that time to vote on life-saving gun violence prevention legislation, instead of canceling votes altogether.
“The American people strongly support action on the gun violence crisis and the gun violence prevention laws that will keep their kids alive. A recent Fox News poll shows that 87 percent support universal background checks; 80 percent support red flag laws and 61 percent support banning assault weapons.”
As noted by The Hill, Congress recessed last week, cancelling scheduled votes “after GOP leadership was forced to punt a vote on an appropriations bill amid internal disagreements.”
Thompson and fellow Democrats are making this about children, declaring in their letter, “Gun violence is the leading cause of death of children in America since 2020. Last year, 1,686 children were killed and another 4,485 were injured by gun violence.”
Gun rights activists contend that none of the legislation Democrats want to adopt will prevent criminals from committing violent crimes. The proposals all appear to add restrictions on law-abiding citizens, including a ban on the most popular rifle in the country today, the modern semi-auto rifle in various chamberings.
The Task Force letter may be read here.
According to The Hill report, “More than 400 mass shootings have occurred this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.”
Particularly interesting is that the Democrats acknowledge in their letter they need Republican help to move their anti-gun agenda.
“To save the lives of our kids,” Democrats lament, “we only need the opportunity to vote on gun violence prevention legislation and the support from a tiny minority of the Republican Conference. For example, if only 20 Republicans, 10 in the House and 10 in the Senate voted for the Bipartisan Background Checks bill, we would have the votes to help prevent felons, domestic abusers, terrorists and people with serious mental health conditions from accessing guns.”
The letter ignores the fact that felons and terrorists acquire firearms through illicit channels, bypassing background checks entirely. Others enter false information on their Form 4473 documents, a problem currently dogging Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden.
