An interesting and detailed report from WLS News, the ABC affiliate in Chicago, on new gun laws taking effect with the new year leaves out what many in the Second Amendment community might consider a major omission.
There is no mention about how many of these new laws are already being challenged in court by major gun rights organizations and their affiliates.
For openers, the story mentions mass shootings that occurred last year but did not mention incidents that were interrupted by armed private citizens. There were two very high profile incidents, in Charleston, West Virginia and two months later at the Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana.
The story noted passage of Oregon’s Measure 114, but didn’t mention the four federal challenges and one state lawsuit that tied components of the measure up in court.
Then New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed several anti-gun measures including one on Dec. 22 which immediately drew separate federal lawsuits from the Second Amendment Foundation and National Rifle Association.
Legislation signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has also drawn federal challenges from SAF and NRA.
A new law banning the sale of so-called “large capacity magazines” in Washington State also drew a federal lawsuit from SAF.
Delaware’s Lethal Firearms Safety Act of 2022 drew a federal lawsuit from the Delaware State Sportsmen’s Association, Bridgeville Rifle and Pistol Club, the Delaware Association of Federal Firearms Licensees, Delaware Rifle and Pistol Club, and several individual members of those organizations.
