This 230-page softbound pocket-size volume is not a “how to” volume, but a volume of selected quotes, gems of wisdom, etc. on hunting.
Following the short Preface and Introduction, it is divided into three parts: Origins and Methods, What We Hunt and Why, and Logic of Hunting. Lastly, there are comments on the Works and Authors Quoted, Notes on Selected Authors, and an Index.
This tome is adequately illustrated with wildlife—from red squirrel to Cape Buffalo, and quail to turkey—photos in full color. No photograph on every page, or even every other page, but enough to whet the appetite for a few more of the same high quality.
While every reader of this tome will not recognize all the authors quoted, the names of the majority of said authors should be recognized. Among those noted are quotes by Fred Bear, W.D.M. “Karamojo” Bell, Jim Carmichael, Jim Corbett, Ben East, Elgin Gates, Ernest Hemingway, Elmer Keith, Aldo Leopold, Annie Oakley, Jack O’Connor, Theodore Roosevelt, Robert Ruark, Ernest Thompson Seton, Leo Tolstoy, Col. Townsend Whelen, Lee Wulff, and Ed Zern. There are many additional names which could be mentioned.
This gem is not a reference volume, per sa, unless you need a suitable quote to prove a point in a conversation. It is an enjoyable volume to read to reinforce your belief in the art and sport of hunting.—Larry Sterett
