Sarah Cade Hauptman joined “The Daily Bullet” to talk about the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus (MGOC).
The Daily Bullet is part of the Second Amendment Foundation’s Media Outreach, and Hauptman is a team leader with the organization.
When questioned about the origins of the organization, Hauptman recalled, “In the early 2000s, a group was formed in Minnesota called the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance (GOCRA). They were brilliant and driven. They did all of the groundwork in 2001 when we got ‘shall issue concealed carry’ passed. This was huge to Minnesota Second Amendment supporters.”
In 2015, the MGOC was formed to continue the expansion of 2A rights in Minnesota. The organization started with success by having suppressors legalized and then helped to pass legislation allowing emergency powers protections so that when a state emergency is declared gun confiscation will not occur and gun stores cannot be closed while other businesses remain open.
When asked what current challenges the Caucus was facing, Hauptman noted that “Minnesota is a purplish state.”
“There is a two to three seat pro-gun majority in the Minnesota Senate,” she explained. “That is the only thing that is stopping a raft of Virginia-style gun control from passing here. Our goal is to preserve the senate majority.”
“We’re doing as much as we can with through our PAC to keep our pro-gun candidates in office, and to elect new pro-gun candidates,” she added.
Hauptman recently started a video series called “Caucus Live.”
“I’m a very strong believer in the right to keep and bear arms,” she said. “So much so that even when your situation needs hope, that I felt the need to be personally to feel effective and contribute. We all need to feel like we have control over our environment. I decided that ‘Caucus Live” was my way to advance our cause.”
“Caucus Live” is a broadcast targeted at new gun owners. Hauptman explained the format is like a variety show with each week focusing on different topics. The content is intended for new firearms owners but includes more advanced information. You can log in on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm CST at https://www.facebook.com/gunownersmn
