Three new models from Spyderco for 2017 are certain to fill many needs for lots of outdoorsmen and gun owners who carry knives.
Samples provided to TGM were simply superb; razor sharp right out of the box and well-built to boot.
One that we had been waiting for is the Rubicon, a rugged little folder with a blade reminiscent of a hunting/skinning knife that would also prove itself rather formidable in a defensive situation. Designed by Peter Carey, the Rubicon folder features a liner lock and skeletonized titanium liner with a carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle.
The Rubicon is easy to like with its hollow-ground 3.04-inch straight edge blade made from CPM S30V stainless steel and it really does come out of the box with an edge one could shave with. The only thing that this model lacks is a lanyard hole in the butt end, but that’s because the pocket clip is reversible from side to side and the knife has a “tip up” design so that the tip of the folded blade is facing up when the knife is clipped inside the pocket.
Designed as a “flipper,” that is, a knife that may be opened by pressing on the blade stub that comes up on the back side of the handle, the Rubicon opens in a split second. The blade also features Spyderco’s trademark thumb hole.
For fans of very small knives that can do lots of utility work, the Roadie is a sweet little number featuring a non-locking blade that can handle those little jobs for which a larger knife is overkill.
Available in several colors, the Roadie has a 2.09-inch sheepfoot-style blade made from N690Co steel with a flat ground edge. The handle is made from FRN (fiberglass-reinforced nylon).
The Roadie’s closed length is a scant 2.99 inches, so it carries easily in a pocket, purse or accessories box.
Last and certainly not least, the new fixed-blade Junction is as durable and rugged as they come. This is a knife for hunters, anglers, backpackers and general outdoor uses. It has a full-flat ground straight edge on a PSF27 stainless steel blade that measures 4.15 inches.
Featuring a full tang design with G-10 handles and two tubular rivets that can double as lanyard holes, one up front and one at the butt, the new Junction is 8.45 inches overall. Important for anyone who covers long distances, this model weighs a scant 4.1 ounces, and comes with a custom molded Boltaron sheath with a C-clip that weighs only about 1.5 ounces more.
Designed by Gayle Bradley, the Junction is the kind of knife that through-hikers might carry, but it would also find plenty of uses around any hunting camp on the planet.
